In a public ceremony in June 2012, government, education, business and industry and the community came together and pledged to have every student reading at grade level by the third grade. Following that ceremony, local volunteers and non-profits hosted the first annual Book Blast, a celebration of community literacy. Although organizers expected only 200 participants, over 2,000 individuals showed up.
Through the support of the University of Georgia’s Archway Partnership and the AmeriCorps VISTA program, Readers to Leaders has grown from a simple declaration and celebration in 2012 to a maturing literacy effort with a robust roster of literacy and education programs. In March 2016 the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership adopted R2L under their leadership to work towards our healthy lifestyle initiatives.
Examples of our work include:
- Power Lunches, a free book distribution and reading program at summer USDA feeding sites to mitigate loss of learning from “summer slide”.
- Book Nooks, 21 fully stocked free-standing bookcases placed in public gathering places throughout Dalton and Whitfield County.
- Reach Out and Read, a book distribution program implemented through area pediatrician offices where parents receive free books and instruction on developmental milestones to look for at well-child visits.
- Saturday Academy, a school readiness program that simulates a pre-school classroom for families on Saturday mornings.
- Ms. Frizzle School Visits, a volunteer-staffed effort in which “Ms. Frizzle” from the Magic School Bus book series visits local school to share science education literacy programming.
- Pre-K Registration, at which Readers to Leaders provides every child with a book and a fun literacy-themed reading area.

5th Annual Book Blast Literacy Celebration: Thursday, July 28, 2016
Readers to Leaders hosts an annual literacy celebration at the Mack Gaston Community Center. Children from all over come for a fun filled, reading centered celebration. Volunteers are needed to help with craft areas, games, reading circles and more! Keep a watch out for more information about this event!
Volunteers are needed for registration, reading circles, book characters, crafts, etc. Sign up to volunteer here!
Readers to Leaders has twenty-one small book shelves scattered about the Dalton/Whitfield area. These book shelves are in waiting rooms of businesses, doctor’s offices, and non-profit organizations. The goal of this project is to simply put books in the hands of children. While parents are waiting, children may read these books and if they choose to, they may take them home.
We are in need of stewards to assist in maintaining these book shelves. Books are stored at the Readers to Leaders office. Stewards check the book shelves, get books from R2L and restock them when needed.
